Cambi enters Portugal with a THP contract in Lisbon

27. October 2026 kl. 16:53

Cambi ASA has signed a medium-sized contract with Luságua, an Aquapor company within the Saur Group, to deliver a thermal hydrolysis process (THP) system and associated equipment for the Frielas Water Factory near Lisbon, Portugal.

The project will establish Frielas as a modern regional solids treatment centre, serving the nearby Alcântara and Alverca water factories without requiring additional digestion capacity.

Since Alcântara and Alverca do not produce biogas, THP from Cambi will significantly increase the site's renewable energy output, thereby improving its energy self-sufficiency. The additional green electricity is sufficient to cover the demand of more than 6,000 Portuguese households.

The project will also enhance dewatering, roughly halving the final biosolids volume. The sterilised, low-odour biosolids product is better suited for land application, thereby strengthening the local circular economy.

Per Lillebø, CEO of Cambi, commented: "Águas do Tejo Atlântico is taking an important step by introducing thermal hydrolysis at Frielas as a first in Portugal. The project combines stronger energy recovery, efficient regional sludge treatment, and high-quality biosolids management. Cambi appreciates the opportunity to work with Luságua on the delivery of an important reference project in Portugal."

Águas do Tejo Atlântico is a subsidiary company of Aguas do Portugal, managing the Greater Lisbon and West wastewater system. The company serves 23 municipalities and a daily population of 2.3 million through 100 water factories. Frielas serves more than 245,000 people. The new solids treatment centre will have the capacity to serve more than 1 million people.

The THP system is scheduled for delivery in 2028.

About Cambi

Cambi is a global provider of technologies and services for water and wastewater treatment and organic materials management. Since 1992, the company has served utilities, municipalities, and industrial customers.

The thermal hydrolysis process (THP) remains Cambi's core technology. More than 100 Cambi THP systems are in operation across more than 25 countries on 6 continents. The process is used in conjunction with anaerobic digestion to enhance the treatment of organic feedstocks, increase biogas production, improve dewatering, and reduce final biosolids volumes. It can be integrated into new and existing facilities and supports downstream routes ranging from land application to thermal processing.

The wider portfolio includes technologies for nutrient recovery and digestion, lifecycle services, biosolids logistics and land application, composting, and soil production.

Cambi ASA is listed on Euronext Growth Oslo under the ticker CAMBI. Find out more at cambi.com.
